In a shock announcement, South Africa-based SGS Qualifor – FSC’s second largest certifier – has said that it has taken a ‘business decision’ not to issue any further FSC forest management certificates, pending a ‘review’ of it’s forest management certification processes. The announcement, made on the FSC’s website, is believed to pre-empt an imminent decision by the FSC Secretariat to formally suspend SGS’s accreditation worldwide. SGS has recently been forced to withdraw several non-compliant certificates, including in Guyana and Spain, following damning assessments by FSC’s Accreditation Services International; in April this year, the certifier was also banned from all certification activities in Poland.

What’s the alternative? Reduce consumption
One of the questions that we receive on a fairly regular basis at FSC-Watch is, “What’s your alternative?”. There are several answers to this question. First, FSC-Watch exists to point out the flaws in the Forest Stewardship Council as it currently operates. Clearly, one “alternative” would be for FSC to address these flaws. For example, FSC could take seriously the problem that the certifying bodies are hired by the forestry company wanting to be certified. FSC-Watch has pointed out that this is a conflict of interest on many occasions. Rainforest Foundation did so in 2002, since when FSC has taken no meaningful action.
FSC’s greenwash at the Convention on Biodiversity
Yesterday, FSC organised a side-event at the Ninth Conference of Parties to the Convention on Biodiversity in Bonn. Activists from Global Forests Coalition and World Rainforest Movement made their voices heard at the side event.
“Forest liars” campaign launched against environmental groups supporting FSC
Recently, Glen Barry of the Ecological Internet, launched an email action against organisations that support FSC. “Greenpeace, WWF, Rainforest Action Network, NRDC, Forest Ethics, Friends of the Earth and Rainforest Alliance were called upon to immediately end their support for the Forest Stewardship Council’s (FSC) greenwashing of first time logging of primary and old-growth forests”, states Barry in a press release. (Ecological Internet’s Action Alert, “Forest Liars” is available here and a discussion about this Action Alert is here.)
FSC acknowledges system flawed by ‘conflict of interest’
In a long article in the UK magazine ‘Ethical Consumer’, Andrei de Freitas – FSC’s Head of Policy and Standards – has admitted that the FSC system does suffer from conflicts of interest, and that the FSC is ‘not a failsafe system’.
Rainforest ‘Death’ Alliance SmartWood targeted in protest at ancient forest destruction
Braving sub-zero temperatures and wearing gorilla and bird costumes, a group of New York City environmentalists rallied outside the headquarters of Rainforest Alliance last week, demanding an end to the organization’s certification of old-growth industrial logging.
Liedeker to quit as FSC Director
FSC-Watch has received the following announcement from the Chair of the FSC Board.
Rainforest Alliance to launch new certification scheme to rival FSC
In a move that will further add to FSC’s woes, the biggest of its accredited ‘certifiers’, Rainforest Alliance SmartWood, has announced plans to launch it’s own ‘logging certification’ scheme, which is closely modelled on the FSC. In a consultation document circulated recently by SmartWood, the organisation claimed that it “remains an unequivocal, global supporter of the FSC system as the most credible forest certification system” but then, before introducing the proposed rival system, goes on to say that “we also believe that the FSC system can be improved”.
Rainforest Action Network: FSC Credibility on Thin Ice
We reproduce below a posting which appeared yesterday on Understory, the official blog of the Rainforest Action Network.
Stop GE Trees Campaign seeks clarification of FSC’s position on GM trees
Following FSC-Watch’s post questioning FSC’s position on genetically modified trees, (and an article in the World Rainforest Movement Bulletin), the Stop GE Trees Campaign has written to Heiko Liedeker requesting clarification. Copies of the letter have also been sent to FSC’s Board and to Andre de Freitas, FSC’s Head of Policy and Standards. (I wrote to de Freitas on 23 August 2007, requesting a clarification of FSC’s position on GM trees. De Freitas did not reply.)
